Senscient was chosen to provide early detection to ensure total safety against fugitive hydrochloric acid at a chemical plant in Qatar. The Senscient gas detection application is being installed at a facility that will produce 8,000 tonnes per annum of high grade polysilicon for export to the world’s solar energy markets. In this process, quartz is converted into ingots, wafers, cells, modules and then finally solar cells. Hydrochloric acid is used in this process thus making it critical to have safety systems for early detection of any fugitive gases.
Unlike detection at a single point, Senscient’s patented Enhanced Laser Diode Spectroscopy (ELDSTM) technology provides gas detection across an open path without the risk of false or unwanted alarms that normally occur due to sand, fog, direct sun, reflections or other gases that “trick” the detectors. This application will create an invisible, gas detection boundary around the process units and provide sufficient warning in the event of any gas excursion.
